Iñaki did his PhD in Bilbao in Amanda Sierra’s lab where he studied microglial phagocytosis and the effects that blocking it has in neurogenesis in the hippocampal neurogenic niche. During this time he also joined the lab of Markus Britschgi at the Roche site in Basel for a secondment where he continued a drug screening to find modulators of microglial phagocytosis using iPSC derived models.
Later, Iñaki joined the lab of Christian Haass as a postdoctoral researcher to focus on the role of different TREM2 variants in microglial physiology in vivo and in iPSC derived models.
He now joins the Bentires-Alj lab to investigate the bi-directional communication between brain metastasis and cells in the brain parenchyma, in particular the contribution of microglia to the tumor microenvironment.
